LIRA CORPORATE LEAGUE STANDS WITH UHURU SICKLE CELL RUN 2026

This Saturday, 3 October 2026, Lira City will lace up for a cause that goes far beyond the finish line. The 3rd Annual Uhuru Sickle Cell Run, organised by the Catherine Phil Sickle Cell Support Initiative (CAPSCI), will start at 6:30 a.m. at Lira Town College playground. It is a call to run for life, for hope, and against sickle cell disease.
The Lira Corporate League has long used sport as a platform for corporate social responsibility in the Lango sub-region. Through monthly outings, blood donation drives, health screening and community outreach, the League has shown that corporates can compete, connect and give back. Its recent activation at Uganda Technical College Lira, organised with Gazelles Corporate Club, used sport to spotlight sickle cell disease and invite the public to the Uhuru Run. That partnership now finds its fullest expression this weekend.

Sickle cell disease remains a heavy burden in Lango, where prevalence is higher than the national average. Lira Regional Referral Hospital alone registers more than 1,780 patients. Many families still travel long distances for basic confirmatory tests. Proceeds from this year’s run will purchase haemoglobin electrophoresis machines for Dokolo Health Centre IV and Aduku Health Centre IV in Kwania, bringing accurate diagnosis closer to communities and easing pressure on regional facilities.
Previous editions have already delivered machines to Lira Regional Referral Hospital, Alebtong, Apac and Amolatar. Each kilometre run translates into earlier detection, better care and fewer preventable crises. CAPSCI, led by Executive Director Daniel Roy Odur, continues to combine testing, awareness, psychosocial support and advocacy. A Lango Sickle Cell Stakeholders Summit on 2 October will set the stage for coordinated action.

The Lira Corporate League’s involvement underscores a simple truth: responsible business is community business. When companies, professionals and residents stand together on the same starting line, they send a powerful message that no family should face sickle cell disease alone.
Join the movement. Secure a kit at UGX 20,000. Call 0392 150047 or 0772 897869, or write to info@capsci-uganda.org. Arrive early at Lira Town College playground. Run for diagnosis. Run for dignity. Run against sickle cell.
Together with the Catherine Phil Sickle Cell Support Initiative and the Lira Corporate League, every step this Saturday is a step toward healthier families across Lango.
